Use of authoring tool on a remote server

Sorry if this is a naive question. If I manage to install the authoring tool on a virtual machine on a server that I have remote access to (following the instructions online)...

Will I just be able to provide other users (who have access to that machine) with user accounts and they will be able to log in and create content for themselves. Or do I need to also set up some kind of web server too, or configure any firewall/port settings?

I had assumed I'd just be able to substitute "localhost" for whatever the address is of the machine I manage to install it on, and then let numerous people have access to create their own content (and then export it). Is this the intended functionality?

Thanks.
