I must be missing something. I'm trying to test out the authoring tool. I've added a couple of pages to a course, and selected the standard box-menu plugin. When I preview the course, the menu drawer appears, but it is empty.

Hope you are getting on ok with the tool.
Box menu shows the the pages when the course first loads. From the sound of your question you are hoping to see the pages in some kind of quick menu in the course?
Perhaps a plugin like adapt-contrib-drawerPageNavigation?

Thanks for your response. If the drawer is something else, not connected to the menu, a separate plugin, why is it displayed when it's not configured/empty? So far as I can tell it's not even installed.

The Drawer is part of the core of Adapt so you don't have to install it.
If it's displaying even when empty then that sounds a lot like this bug.
