Details:
- in the Mp3 format
- 19 seconds in duration
- playback controller functions
- can't hear anything in Preview or Published version
- same issue in all browsers
- assets is in the Assets folder, audio plays when I click on it.
- there is nothing else in the course, just a sample audio component block
Sounds like there might be something wrong with the mp3 file... have you tried any others?
Either that or you could have muted audio for all your browsers, on Windows it's possible to do that...

I don't think it's the audio file per se, I've tried several... and my Youtube audio is fine, so I don't think it's a browser issue - but I will keep poking around and perhaps try from another machine at home :-)
Additionally, it DOES play in the Asset Library OK...

That we be MUCH appreciated! What's the best way for me to send this to you? Just as a ZIP published course? Also, I recorded a very short MP3 (of me) and it also won't play on my personal laptop. This is soooo odd!

Hi Thomas, try to change "_startVolume": "100%" or remove "_startVolume": "0%" in your components.json

ACK! It worked, but that's a bit brutal...
Do I need to do this each time I publish the course? Or is there somewhere in the framework that I can tweak this? Seems a bit odd for a default to me :-)

You do not need to do it every time you publish the course.
It is not necessary include "_startVolume". Just leave default value.
Going by the ids and filenames in your zip it looks like you're using the authoring tool? If so, 80% volume should be the default setting.
If you're using the framework then, as Ignacio quite rightly says, you don't need to include this property at all - unless you want to change it from the default (80%).
