Greetings from Canada

Hello all, just thought I'd drop a line and send greetings from Canada.

I'm the IT / Operations Manager for de Souza Institute. We create eLearning courses, specializing in oncology nursing continuing education. While we are currently a Lectora/Flash shop, I have been trying to slowly start pushing us towards HTML5 and responsive design. We've been striving to use mostly Open Source solutions and have the IT expertise and developers to tweak them to our needs. This project looks to be an ideal future development tool for us and also something we could contribute to the development of.

One of the biggest challenges and something we have been running into is how to handle IE8 and 9 without flash for activities. We've been hamstrung in our move away from Flash by these as we cannot control our learners computers and hospital equipment here tending to be on the older side.

Hey Mathew,

Great to hear from you. We made the decision to go with HTML and responsive design and it's been a huge success. We also had the same issue when dealing with IE8 and IE9 without Flash.

What we've found really works is explaining to the customer our expectations and thinking about concepts that can flow down the page to engage the learners in other ways.

We're currently in a process of sorting out a live demonstration of some of the courses we've created with Adapt and will post on here when this event will be. We'd like to share our experience and knowledge of working with Adapt and how it can work with companies and individuals.

It's great to hear you'd like to get involved - once we're at a stage for developers to get involved we will post this on here too. However you can get involved in the community discussions - there's a current discussion about browser support which might interest you.

Daryl

Great to hear Daryl. The demo would be very interesting, especially if you have it delivered within Moodle. It's what we use for our courses with the majority of the content coming from SCORM packaged Lectora modules.

Hi Mathew

For IE8 you can't completely drop Flash, because it has no built-in support for playing back audio or video. But that should be the only time its use is required. You might choose to use it in other instances e.g. for creating animations, simply due to better performance over animating with JavaScript in this browser.

For IE9 there shouldn't be any reason you still need to use Flash. Again, you might choose to include it for specific functionality e.g. for fullscreen video support which isn't available in HTML5 video in IE9.
